I think my brother-in-law is about to become an obnoxious ricer. I’m trying to teach him the true ways of racecar, but I don’t think he’s listening.

Also, is cute that he thinks he’ll be a able to stick to this budget.

What if I told you

Racecar and ricer

Are synonyms

Seriously more often than not “because racecar” is used as justification for removing the back seats from your Civic or some other dumb upgrade .

I say mind your own business, until he asks you for an opinion on something. Then be brutally and unapologetically honest. Works for me most of the time.

I see what you mean, but I feel like there is still a difference between a stripped car used for auto-x and a typical slammed fartcan civic.

I agree there definitely is. But “racecar” gets so much abuse. I think it’s more common for real race cars to be referred to as track cars, thankfully.

an H23A in a civic is not that much of a bad idea. The slamming part I’m not a fan of, but all the other things, I really like. Maybe you could explain to him that it would be a better/smarter idea to put some proper suspension parts on it instead of stancing it, with the kind of power he intends to make.

Also, his estimates for the prices aren’t that far off. In Europe anyways, he would spend a lot less for a swap like that.

Serious question tho, what made you put the plaque ‘ricer’ on him from this story? Apart from the stance thing, his ideas dont seem ricey at all. I see no talk about fartcans, huge wings, bodykits etc etc. Plus, the stance thing, I mean, I hate it, but its a culture though. I see it in the same way as Bosuzoku in Japan for example. Im not a fan, but its not your typical ricey behaviour/mods....

This needs to be a thing. For shitty ricecar mods that are justified as “racecar” mods.

I don’t know, he’s found a cheap car that he’s planning on doing an engine swap and turbo upgrade on? Sounds like a fun project to me.

It is mostly a good idea, which is a key reason as to why I want to steer him more towards race car. I actually did recommend a proper suspension setup, and nothing else.

As far as cost, there’s just other things that he probably hasn’t thought of yet (suspension being one of them).

Rice has many definitions, I suppose. But he’s kind of a sheep, and if he slams his car he’ll likely start hanging with the slammed crowd. It could really go either way.

The engine swap and turbo I’m down with, but the slamming, combined with no expressed desire to modify handling and stopping power, and the fact that he can be kind of a douche, Make me think that this will not go in what I consider an ideal direction.

Right? I’m trying to talk him into getting some proper suspension. The lower end turbo kits I’m looking at for the h23 claim to make over 300 whp.

Yeah he needs to spend if he wants a low car that actually works. It is possible to make a lowered car handle but it sure as hell ain’t cheap...

Does he have the mechanical ability to swap an H series motor into a Civic? If he doesn’t you won’t need to worry about his lack of brakes and proper suspension.

Not sure how it is with Marine bases, but I used the auto shop at Ft Riley all the time while I was stationed there. There usually will be a shop on Army posts that’s really cheap to use, lifts and all.

Just get yourself a sweet sounding HEMI and you’ll enjoy whipping him on a regular basis. I sure enjoy mashing the go pedal to put fart cannons in their place.

Alternatively, you could be the cool BIL and try helping him with it, and build it as an autocross toy, and try to keep him in line about driving it responsily.

As a guy who has an H23A (in a 5th gen Prelude), just getting the thing to work in a USDM car is a chore in itself. You need a donor H22 to take the sensors and things off. The engine itself only cost me about $700, but getting it going in the car ended up being about $3000 after everything. New seals, belts, hoses, mounts, etc. And that’s going into a car that originally housed an H, doing the work myself (along with my dad and a couple friends) and not even taking cost of tools into consideration. Costs even more to put it into a Civic. But, uh, you don’t have to tell him any of this. ;)

I don’t want to support that notion, but I’m going to anyway, because you’re right.

It is worth mentioning, though, that a racecar sacrifices practicality and comfort for speed/performance. A stereotypical ricer sacrifices practicality and comfort for looks/entertainment/the lulz. Because of this, I’m much more forgiving toward the racecar.

well, its not a terrible plan, and worst case he’s out $4k on a project and learns at least $4k worth of knowledge.

I’d ditch the turbo idea, an H series in a Civic should already be enough to get him in trouble. Plus a turbo would need all its accompanying things to get it working well, bigger injectors, fuel pump often, tuning or new ECU etc.

also, a slammed civic with an H series engine usually have oil pan clearance problems because they tend to sit lower than the D and B series engines.

Honestly I’d be fluctuating between deflating his plans and helping him achieve something good with some minor tweaks, or option B which is following his progress and shaking your head at each bad mistake he makes.

either way, good luck! keep us updated, or better yet, direct him to oppo so we can follow along as he learns :D

We were all there at one point. We all learned from those mistakes. We sure as hell didn’t listen to what other people wanted us to do to our car. I was greatly influenced by the cars I saw up close and personal. He needs to find someone with a properly setup civic and go for a ride. Then once he is finished slamming his he will realize the difference. I’ve driven a 95 civic hatch with a stock k24 and that thing was a beast for a street car.

Maybe get him a set of used coilovers for his birthday or something.
